I know when I am driving, that I take most of the features in my car, like the rearview mirror, seatbelts, CD player, and cup holders for granted and just assume all people have had and used them. But there was a time that these features weren't standard on cars! 

Kia Motors recently released really cool video all about the "Evolution of the Modern Car!" and in this video they show when all these often taken for granted features arrived on and in cars! This video is a trip down memory lane from 1880 to the cars we know and love today.

I thought it was really interesting that the rearview mirror was developed way back in the 1910's and the turn signal in the 1930's! They have been around in cars for A LONG TIME!

Best Holiday Traveling Tips

One of the reasons I recently moved closer to family is so that we don't have to take super long road trips every holiday! I like road trips...but not with two children under 3! 

But over the last three years and driving over 10 hours each road trip to visit family (usually once a month!), I have learned lots of tips to keep my children entertained, snacks to bring and top items I need to bring for each trip!

My first and biggest tip for traveling with small children is the time of day you leave and travel! I learned over the years to leave on a road trip either right before a nap time or bed time or during a meal (or both!). Sleeping and eating times in a car provide for hours of distraction and quietness in the car! We would either leave right before a naptime or at night right before supper and bedtime so that the hours got spent eating and sleeping instead of trying to find things for our children to do!

We also learned to pack meals for our children so that we wouldn't need to stop. Each road trip consisted of a PB & J sandwich, banana, and carrots for my son and we tried to bring snacks and water bottles we could eat and drink on the road for us too! This eliminates extra stops that aren't needed and only slow down and delay the trip! Plus, you save money on food!

As for the top items we always bring, once again food, but also my children's blankets and stuffed animals for sleeping so they can sleep soundly and there isn't too much adjustment for them. Also, we fill a small backpack with toys, books, and other items for my son to play with! We learned that one of the biggest things that entertained my son for the longest time was ripping up paper and putting it in a play wallet's pocket! He would rip paper and put it in containers for hours and it was free!!! I love that! Coloring and magnets were also a big hit in the car with my son!

I almost feel like a pro in the car on road trips after over 120 hours in the car each year but I sure do enjoy shorter trips these days to visit family! :)

What is your #1 favorite road trip memory?

As a child growing up, our family of TEN jumped in our vehicle, roadtripped it for a week, and went on a summer family vacation every summer to amazing destinations all over this great country! Every summer it was somewhere new and I have so many memories of visiting awe-inspiring places such as the Grand Canyon, Rocky Mountains, Glacier National Park, Yellowstone, Mayan Ruins, Sand Dunes, Colonial sites on the East coast and so on and so on! I can't wait now as a parent to make those kind of memories with my children and expand their horizons and knowledge of our country's history and amazing sites!

However, I have to admit, one of my favorite road trips of all time was one I took with my husband soon after we married. We were entertaining the idea of moving to western North Carolina to the beautiful weather and beautiful mountains so we decided to roadtrip out there (20+ hours) and check out houses, churches, and jobs! 

I will never forget the beautiful scenery, the long talks my husband and I had, and the great bonding experience the whole trip was! We visited the Biltmore House, met some great people and fell in love with the state!

When we got home, we pursued jobs with a fervor and a passion, but God had other plans for us and the jobs never worked out in the long run. We decided God was telling us that maybe it wasn't a good decision at this point in our lives and we sadly left the idea of moving to NC behind us!

However, I will NEVER forget the amazing memories my husband and I made on our first road trip together as husband and wife making dreams and memories together!
