Here Burns My Candle Book Review

A daughter who cannot escape her past.

My Opinion

I am always interested in books about other cultures and countries so when I saw Here Burns My Candle was about Ireland and the Irish culture, I was very intrigued!

The book was definitely filled with Ireland! The language was hard to understand at times, because the author definitely used many Irish words and phrases. It did make it hard to follow along at times (there is an index of the definitions of the Irish words in the back of the book) but I liked learning how the Irish really speak.

I also LOVED how this book was an Irish version of the story of Ruth from the Bible. Lady Elizabeth Kerr was Ruth in the book and followed the story from the Bible really well! It was such a poignant reminder of what Ruth and her mother-in-law went through and the challenges they faced. (But I hated knowing her husband was going to die!). There were great lessons to be learned both from Ruth's and Lady Kerr's story and it was awesome to see in this book!

I recommend Here Burns My Candle for all people interested in Ruth's story from the Bible and also for anyone that loves the Irish culture! If you don't like to have to translate various words throughout the book into English, then this might not be the book for you! However, the storyline and reminders from God were very powerful!
