Book Review: Lady in Waiting

Veteran author Susan Meissner blends past and present in this compelling novel about making choices. Jane Lindsay never thought she'd be alone, but after her husband leaves her, she must face the reality of her marriage and life choices. One small ring, found in the binding of a book bought at an English rummage sale, changes the course of Jane's thinking as she researches another Jane, whose name is inscribed in the ring. Readers jump back in time to England after the death of Henry VIII. Lucy Day is ordered to Sudeley Castle, bearing a dress for Lady Jane Grey. Lucy narrates the tale of Lady Jane, pawn in the schemes of powerful men who seek the throne of England even as young Jane Grey is determined to live-and die-on her own terms. Modern Jane studies Lady Jane, coming to realize that she alone must choose how she lives. Both the history and the modern tale are enticing, with Meissner doing a masterful job blending the two.

My Opinion
Lady in Waiting was a very different historical fiction book than I normally read because it was not only set in the past but also in present times. It switched between two women's stories and with one Jane's story inspiring the present day Jane to be a strong, independent woman and find out who she is!

I loved the historical parts and learning about Lady Jane Grey! I love that time in history and it was really interesting to learn about Lady Jane Grey and how she was related to King Henry VIII!

I really liked the present day Jane's story too because it was a story I think all women can relate to! We all have troubles in our life and relationships and it might help remind us who we are and what we want in life!

I recommend Lady in Waiting for all fiction lovers! It is a great book for historical and present day fiction readers and you will be able to relate with both Jane characters as they struggle to be women and find out who they really are and who they want to be!

I reviewed this book as well and LOVED it! I ordered two more of Meissner's books to read. I just finished The Shape of Mercy and it was really good, as well. Since you liked Lady in Waiting you might like The Shape of Mercy too.
