Caitlin: A Soldier's Tale Book Review

I recently received Caitlin: A Soldier's Tale by James W. Conlin published by Dorrance Publishing Co. This book is a historical fiction novel about John Caitlin, a soldier who takes a journey starting in the Calvary of the Great Plains in the 1850's to the Civil War Campaigns in the West. It follows his journey through wars, promotions, and love. He is a natural leader and the book follows his growth into a true American hero - soldier, citizen, husband, and father.

My Opinion
This book is written by James W. Caitlin who is a retired military Intelligence specialist. Therefore, the book is very technical with lots of talk of war promotions and other war talk. It is sometimes hard to follow if you don't know much about the military or its operations. However, the story line is one that grasps you and makes you want to keep reading. I celebrated with John Caitlin as he acted as a hero and as he was rightfully promoted and also was on the edge of my seat as he fought in war after war, watching his friends and comrades die around him. Overall, it is a great story line and I liked following along on John Caitlin's journey through life in the military in the 1800's.

I recommend this book to people interested in historical fiction books and military novels. The history aspect was very prominent and I loved that part. The military aspect was also equally prominent so it helps if you have a general understanding of military operations and lingo.
