prAna, an ancient Sanskrit word for breath, life and vitality of the spirit, has helped guide their actions and lift their aspirations since day one. “Breath, life, vitality of the spirit.” These qualities infuse not only their name, but also their aspirations, the things they make and how they make them.
They started out 17 years ago making clothing that worked well for climbing and yoga. It turned out that the clothing worked well for lots of other passions too, so they added new products with "purpose" in mind and scoured the world for design inspiration.
They cut and sewed clothing in their garage and shipped it to customers in surplus fruit boxes gathered from the local grocery store. For hangtags, they ground up old newspapers, added essential oils and cut out the handmade paper with a pizza cutter. Their first employee slept on a hinged bed that turned into a shipping table by day.
What's changed since then?
Not much - and a lot. They've grown a bunch, but most of their original employees are still here. They participate in business with like-minded folks who want to promote conservation and create positive change, which reflects the same intention as the old days, just taken up a few notches. Organic cotton, fair trade and wind power initiatives are on the short list of what they support.
I received the Tamryn Coat from prAna. It is soft on the inside and water-repellent on the outside. This packable, hooded jacket layers over bare skin or light layers. Rainbow contrast stitching near the hem and pretty embroidery in back make it cool to be warm. It has partially recycled fleece interior, a semi-fitted upper and an inner iPod pocket.
My Opinion
This coat is perfect for these coming fall and winter months and I love that it is feminine, fitted, and has a hood! It is so soft on the inside and very warm!It has very cute embroidery on the back that really adds a feminine touch and I really, really like the fact it has a hood. It seems really hard these days to find a cute coat that is both warm, cute and HAS A HOOD! I don't know why, but none of my winter coats have hoods and it drives me crazy! I am so relieved to finally have one for this winter!
The only downside for me is the face that since it is fitted pretty tightly, it will be hard to wear any warm clothes under it. I usually like to bundle up in the winter with sweatshirts and long sleeves and then put a coat over it all to stay warm outside. I will just have to wear this coat with light layers...maybe when it is more mild out. Hopefully this coat keeps me warm enough for Wisconsin winters without extra layers underneath!
